The Association of Christians Teaching Sociology

(ACTS)

 June  3 - 6, 2010

 Theme: Christian praxis

Following closely on the trail of last year’s theme, we propose centering this year’s conference on the theme of “Christian praxis.”  If we conceptualize praxis as the synthesis [as opposed to juxtaposition] of action and reflection (or, in Marx’s terms, as “practical-critical” activity), then what does the notion of Christian praxis entail? 

In light of the continued emphasis in our Christian college campuses on issues of integration of faith, learning and service (framed at Eastern University as “Faith, Reason and Justice”), we invite papers that revisit the nature of the relationship between thought and action, or faith and service.  Is this essentially a relationship of complementarity where the one element follows and perhaps completes the other (i.e., service is result of faith), or is it more of a dialectical relationship where each element gives definition and substance to the other? 

Some specific topics to explore under this general theme might include:

§  Defining Christian praxis

§  Christian praxis and Christian practice

§  Issues in Christian praxis

§  Instances / case stories of Christian praxis

§  Christian praxis and short-term missions projects

§  Christian praxis and relief work

§  Christian praxis and community development

§  Christian praxis and the sociological imagination

§  Christian praxis and teaching / learning

 We encourage you to consider presenting a paper at this year’s conference, whether on the theme or outside the theme.
