Messiah College is pleased to host a listserv-style discussion list called ACTS-TALK. It is intended for members of the Association of Christians Teaching Sociology to discuss issues related to the teaching of sociology, the integration of sociology and the Christian faith, job announcements, news of conferences, etc.
For those of you who are not familiar with listserv lists, they are a way that a group of people with a common interest can engage in conversation with each other via electronic mail. When you send a message to the list (ACTS-TALK in this case) the listserv processor sends it back out to everyone. So, someone might send a question to the list, allowing others on the list to respond. Answers can be sent publicly to the list itself, or privately just to the person who asked the question.
ACCESSING THE LIST
To get the listserv processor to do things for you, you must send requests directly to it (and not to ACTS-TALK which is for messages to the group). There are two addresses (Internet) that you need to know:
(note that the upper and lower case are not relevant - they are for emphasis)
SUBSCRIBING TO THE LIST
To subscribe to the list, send a message to LISTSERV@listserv.messiah.edu and in the body of the message just put the following single line request:
subscribe ACTS-TALK Your first name Your last name
substituting your "real" name. So a person named John Smith would subscribe to the list by sending a message to the LISTSERV@listserv.messiah.edu address and in the body of the message place this single line request:
subscribe ACTS-TALK John Smith
The process for unsubscribing is the same only you would substitute the word unsubscribe in place of the word subscribe.
SENDING MAIL TO THE LIST
When you want to send a message to the list, you should send it to:
ACTS-TALK@listserv.messiah.edu
OTHER POSSIBILITIES WITH THE LIST
There are many more things you can get the list processor to do for you (like show you a list of everyone who is subscribed to the list, and to search archives of past messages). For some more information send a message to the LISTSERV@listserv.messiah.edu address and in the body of the message place this single word request:
